how do i become an idol?

  1. Rally a group

Start chatting with your class parents and carers… break the ice, it’s all about having fun and celebrating our amazing community.

No experience needed. Be bold, be brave, and take the stage!

  2. Select a song. Let’s get the crowd movin’!

Throw ideas around. The band will learn the songs.

If you have a few ideas and can’t decide, feel free to email Tim (our band guru) and he may be able to provide some advice.

  3. Submit your Idol nomination

Idol nominations open at midday on 6 March - 12pm. There are only 12 spots available on stage, so get in quick.

  4. Get excited and start singing

Groups typically start practicing in early March, but the commitment is up to the group. Some groups will get together weekly or fortnightly.

Laughing and connecting with other families, kids milling around (usual chaos!), syncing dance moves and choosing wild costumes - what could go wrong!?

    5. Rehearse with the band

There’ll be two opportunities to rehearse with the Idol band prior to the event. These commonly occur on Sunday, on the two weekends prior to Idol.

Dates and locations to be confirmed.

    6. Take the stage

Be an Idol rockstar, diva, celebrity, superstar - “you got this!”

    8. Vote for the Golden Microphone Champion!

Each attendee receives 10 golden tokens to vote for who they believe should take home the infamous Golden Microphone Champion.

The winning group is simply, the act who gets the most tokens.

FAQ’s

  • Westgarth Idol is a social fundraising event run by (and starring) parents/carers of Westgarth Primary School. It’s one of the most fun nights in the school calendar, save the date for a night of dancing, cheering and dazzling entertainment!

Westgarth parents get behind the mic and sing, dance and rock out to their chosen song, cheered on by the crowd.

  • Get your Idol Act together and choose your song! Get chatting with other parents (WhatsApp counts!) and decide on a song… that’s the hard part!

Nominations will be open on Friday, 6 March at 12pm. A submission form will be available on this website. Please have your song name, participant names and emails, and group name ready. Songs need to be performed as per radio edits, no key changes or changes to song structure sorry!

  • Idol Acts focus on singing and we provide a backing band. No musical experience is necessary. If your group would like to play the music as well, that’s fine.

  • Pretty well, although there can’t be two of the same songs at the performance. Once Acts are received, if this has occurred then we’ll contact the groups.

  • There are 12 spots available this year.

  • Groups typically start practicing in early March, but the commitment is up to the group. Some groups will get together weekly or fortnightly.

  • There will be rehearsals with the band taking place on the two weekends prior to the event. On show day, there will be a sound check at Thornbury Theatre where each group will need to be available sometime between 2-6pm.

  • Do you love being on stage, or want to try? Consider being a back-up singer or dancer.

If you’d prefer to be behind-the-scenes, there are plenty of volunteer roles. To be a volunteer, please email westgarthidol@gmail.com or complete the form below.

  • Performance groups must be made up of parents/carers with kids still at WPS, however can include past parents. Staff are also encouraged to participate.

  • Of course! If you’d like to be part of Idol, but don’t have a group, please complete the form below, or email westgarthidol@gmail.com, and we’ll do our best to connect you with a group or construct a group on your behalf.

  • Please email westgarthidol@gmail.com
